Adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s Masterpiece film

With Aurora Acting Company (Anna Lyngby Olsen and Stina Simone Larsen )
Directed by Gérard Carey Bidstrup
Coaching for English script by Kate Maravan (The Actors Centre, London)

PERSONA is one of Ingmar Bergman’s most famous films, rarely adapted for the theatre. AURORA acting company has nevertheless taken up this material and crafted a 50-minute piece, centered around the script’s principal scenes.

The two main characters, nurse Alma and her patient, Elizabeth, are secluded in a house on the Swedish seashore for months. However it is always Alma who talks while Elizabeth listens, insistent on maintaining her own silence.

In this work, as the title suggests, Bergman focuses on the relationships between the masks that each of us wear and our deeper nature. But where is the line between the mask and one’s truer self? Does such a line even exist? Such a mask? A “truer” self? As the play develops, the lines separating Alma from Elizabeth blur, sometimes even vanish, and each woman begins to exist as the mirror of the other.

AURORA will present Bergman’s PERSONA as a NVNP "Work in Progress" before performing it within the Festival d’Avignon (OFF) in July 2013.
